Semi Automatic, Top Load or Front Load? Choosing the Right Washing Machine

Semi automatic, fully automatic top load and front load machines all wash clothes, but they suit very different homes. Here is how to pick the type and the capacity that fit yours.

The right washing machine depends on three things: how much water and time you have, how much space there is, and how many people you are washing for. Here is how the three main types compare.

Semi automatic (twin tub)

A semi automatic machine has two tubs side by side: one washes, the other spins the clothes dry. You move the clothes from one tub to the other and fill the water yourself.

  • Best for: homes with irregular water supply, large families, and anyone who wants the lowest price per kilogram.
  • Good to know: uses less water and power, and you can wash and spin two loads at the same time.

Yara semi automatic machines range from 7 kg to 11 kg, with rust-free bodies, lint filters and built-in spin dryers.

Fully automatic top load

Load the clothes, choose a programme and walk away. A top load machine fills, washes, rinses and spins on its own, and you can add a forgotten sock mid-wash.

  • Best for: busy households with a steady water supply that want convenience at a sensible price.
  • Good to know: needs a tap connection; easy to load without bending down.

Fully automatic front load

A front load machine tumbles clothes through a small amount of water instead of agitating them in a full tub. That is gentler on fabric and uses the least water of the three types.

  • Best for: the cleanest wash, delicate clothes, and fitting under a counter.
  • Good to know: costs more up front and cycles take longer, but water and detergent use are lowest. Yara front loaders use quiet, efficient BLDC motors.

Which capacity do you need?

  • 6.5 to 7 kg: 2 to 3 people
  • 7.5 to 8.5 kg: 3 to 5 people
  • 9 kg and above: 5 or more people, or if you wash bedsheets, blankets and curtains at home
Tip: capacity is the weight of dry clothes the drum can take. A slightly bigger drum than you need gives clothes room to move, so they come out cleaner and less creased.
